Pets travelling to the United Kingdom must complete a set of import requirements. Failing to do so, the pet will be placed under quarantine or deported to the country of origin at the owner’s expense.
All pets arriving in the U.K. must be microchipped. The U.K. uses the standard ISO 11784/11785 pet microchips. You need to do so before or while getting a rabies vaccination to your pet. If the procedure is not followed, entry into the country will be denied and you will have to get your pet vaccinated again.
Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies before any travel. The rabies vaccination certificate must include all the following information: name and address of owner. Dog’s breed, sex, date of birth, color, and markings. Dog’s microchip number, date of rabies vaccination, vaccine product information and vaccine expiration date. Name, license number, address, and signature of veterinarian who administered the vaccination.
Pet must have a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination and sent to an EU-approved blood testing laboratory. The results of the blood test must show that the vaccination was successful (rabies antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml). Titer test sample must be drawn at least 45 days before entering the U.K.
Tapeworm & Screwworm inspection (For Dogs): The dog must be accompanied by a certificate signed by a veterinary of the region of origin stating that the dog has been inspected for screwworm within 5 days before shipment to the U.K. The treatment must contain Praziquantel or an equivalent proven to be effective against Echinococcus Multilocularis Tapeworm. Your dog can be refused entry or put into quarantine if you do not follow this rule.
The vaccination record of your pet must be complete and up to date, with the following details mentioned: Pet’s date of birth, microchip number, date of installation of microchip, location of the microchip on pet’s body, vaccination date, vaccine manufacturer, product name with sticker, vaccine batch number, date of manufacturing of the vaccination & duration of validity, vet’s signature, contact details of the owners. Your vaccination book must be double-stickered, signed, and be stamped by an authorized vet against each vaccine dose.
You must obtain an export/international health certificate for your pet to leave the UAE, and an EU Health Certificate is required for your pet to enter the U.K. Without any of these documents, your pet will not be able to leave the country with you.
Pet quarantine is a preventive measure in animals to curb the spread of any communicable, infectious viral, or bacterial disease to other healthy animals or humans. The pet can be put into quarantine for up to 4 months if the travel procedures to the U.K. are not followed or deported to the country of export at the transporter’s expense.
Along with the import requirements of your destination country, you are also required to fulfil the export requirements of the UAE. Here are the export conditions you must comply with in order to leave the UAE with your pet.
You will need the following to export your pet from the UAE:
Your passport.
Your pet’s passport (also known as their vaccination record).
An international health certificate.
An export permit.
A pet microchip.
An IATA-accredited pet crate.
To conclude, there are a number of requirements you must comply with to successfully export your pet from the UAE into another country. Make sure to begin your preparations well ahead of time, as some of these documents can take several months to gather. Also make sure to take each detail into account, as your destination country reserves the right to deny your pet entry if they are not in compliance with any of the import/export rules.
