The cold isn’t the only thing you’ll need to be wary of when flying to Canada with your pet. Each pet import must comply with the issued regulations to be successfully transported. The process of relocating your pet internationally can be tiresome, especially when you must take care of your own paperwork and plan for your new life at the same time. Here’s everything you’ll need to embark on your Canadian adventure.
Pets leaving their country for Canada must be microchipped. The chip should be a standard, 15-digit, non-encrypted, ISO 11784/11785 chip. You should register your pet’s microchip before any form of travel.
All pets being imported into Canada must be vaccinated against rabies. To check whether the vaccination was successful, a rabies titer test is conducted, the results of which are mandatory for any movement in or out of the country. Depending on the nature of your move, you may/may not be asked to provide a proof of rabies vaccination.
note: Canada accepts 3-year rabies vaccinations.
Canada requires a few more vaccinations, depending on your chosen mode of travel (as accompanied baggage/as manifest cargo).
Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHLPP)
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).
An international health certificate is required to enter the country. This certificate must be completed in either French or English. The certificate should contain the following details: animal identification, dates of vaccination, vaccine manufacturer, and expiration date of the currently provided rabies vaccination. You will also require your pet’s vaccination record. Make sure each vaccination has your vet’s signature and stamp against it.
Canada has banned the following breeds from its major cities, citing them as dangerous breeds: American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, and American Pit Bull Terrier. These dog breeds and any dogs who are offspring of crossbreeding between them are banned from entering Ontario, Toronto, and Winnipeg.
The Government of Canada does not prescribe mandatory pet quarantine for those entering the country. However, under certain circumstances, such as incorrect or inadequate document preparation, inconsistencies in the vaccination record, your pet will be deported. Canada & the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reserve the right to deport any animal that does not meet the import requirements.
Along with the import requirements of your destination country, you are also required to fulfil the export requirements of the UAE. Here are the export conditions you must comply with in order to leave the UAE with your pet.
You will need the following to export your pet from the UAE:
Your passport.
Your pet’s passport (also known as their vaccination record).
An international health certificate.
An export permit.
A pet microchip.
An IATA-accredited pet crate.
Make sure to plan ahead, as the permits and import documentation can take a while to gather and complete properly. Your pet may be returned to the country of export or put into quarantine if you fail to comply with any of your destination country’s requirements.
