Air Pollution Increasingly Affecting Pets According to UAE Vets

Dubai: According to experts and vets in the UAE, an increasing number of pets are suffering from respiratory issues caused by air pollution, leading to pet parents treating them with incubators and inhalers at a high cost.

Dusty and sandy conditions can be exacerbated by the blowing winds and lead to poor air quality, which affects both pets and humans equally. Rhinitis and asthma are common complaints, with pet owners reporting similar symptoms in their pet cats and dogs.

The monthly expense of treating chronic breathing difficulties can reach up to 2,500 Dirhams, due to which vets emphasize the importance of preventive measures instead of treatment to keep costs within limit.

“In my experience over the past 10 years, we've absolutely seen an increase in respiratory disorders in dogs and cats,” said Nora Shackleford, clinical manager at German Veterinary Clinic. “We assume maybe cats are a little bit protected from it because they mainly live indoors but it's important to remember the air quality outside can affect the air quality inside and we have definitely seen an increase in allergies and asthma.”

“Also, because brachycephalic breeds like pugs, French bulldogs and Persian cats are all popular here, they are more susceptible because of their obstructed airways. Air quality is definitely making a difference.”

Coughing, wheezing, and open-mouthed breathing (in cats) indicate respiratory issues. Breathing difficulties are treated similarly to humans with inhalers, nebulizers, and tablets. As the first defense against such conditions is prevention, it is best to avoid going outside when the air quality is noticeably poor and use products like air filters to keep the air at home crisp and clean.
